Blueberry School offers a wide variety of engaging complementary classes. Whether you are interested in arts, leadership, sciences or sports, there's something for you!

Term 1 Course Descriptions

Beading

Learn how to make rings, necklaces, and learn to use a loom. Students will design a pattern and make a beaded masterpiece of their choice.

Outdoor Ed

Outdoor Education uses the natural environment to help participants learn experientially, and direct experience is the foundation for the lessons in this class. Students will explore their relationship to nature and the impact that they have on their natural world. This course will focus on place based education, inquiry based learning and experience as a learning tool. Students will have the opportunity to attend a field trip.

Slo-Pitch

Students will learn the foundational skills needed to participate in sport that encourages socialization and physical activity. Students will learn the rules and scorekeeping.

Textile Arts

Our main challenge for Textile Arts Level One is the Back Sack. This personalized draw-string bag with arm loops can be customized with your own art and choice of colour. As part of our course, we have a special project called the Community Connection Project. In this project, we will create 'Quilt as you go Mug Rugs' for our dedicated School Volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our skills and appreciation for their hard work.

Advanced Art

In Art, you will have the opportunity to explore your creative side through a few different art projects. You will be able to experience working with different mediums and styles.

Driver's Ed

Get ready, get set, become involved in learning how to take your Learner's Permit. There will be class senarios and explanations that are significant to driving. The purpose is for students to work through the AB Learner's Permit manual to prepare for their exam and understand the significance of driving rules.

Floor Hockey

We will be learning the fundamentals of floor hockey, thus leading into 3 on 3 game

Leadership

In this course, we will focus on student wellness and learn effective leadership skills essential to responsible citizenship. Participate in activities that help to develop a positive whole school community, such as: Participating in events in different classrooms
Planning spirit days, Mentoring younger grades, Reading daily announcements, Organizing and leading school-wide activities (friendship club, intramurals, jump into gym etc.), Organizing healthy initiatives (healthy eating awareness, Hats On for Mental Health Day etc.), Assisting with the school recycling program. In the past, Leadership has been heavily involved in various school events like the Monster Mash, Dance, Organization, and Talent Show. These activities may continue, change or be further developed based on student interest and initiative.

Minecraft

Do you like Minecraft? Then this option is for you! We will be exploring different cultures around the world and completing weekly challenge puzzles. A Chromebook with Education Minecraft will be needed. Having a mouse to help make builds easier is recommended

Strategic Board Games

Put your strategic thinking skills to the test against other students. A little 'fun' competition!

Volleyball

Do you enjoy staying active? Students will learn the key skills necessary in order to become more confident participants while playing a game of volleyball.

"Bite of Blueberry" (Grade 7 mini-complementaries)

Grade 7 students have a unique opportunity to get a "taste" of what our complementary courses have to offer at Blueberry. Enjoy!

Music 7

Dive into the exciting world of music and video production! In this course, you’ll: Write and compose your own songs. Learn to record and mix your tracks. Storyboard and design your music videos. Film your video. Edit your footage and add special effects. Showcase your talent for an appreciative audience. Gain creative, technical, and teamwork skills while building confidence.

Art 7

This class will introduce you to a variety of art techniques, from perspective drawing, to learning how to draw a face, to learning how to blend colors effectively.

Term 2 Course Descriptions

Advanced Art

In Art, you will have the opportunity to explore your creative side through a few different art projects. You will be able to experience working with different mediums and styles.

Basketball

Love to shoot some hoops and looking to finetune your skills? We will cover basic skills and then use 5-on-5 games to perfect your game.

Course Fee: $10

Cosmetology

Do you love makeup, nail design, or styling hair? Then this class is for you! In this class, you will have the opportunity to explore makeup application, nail care, and basic hairstyling.

We will delve into the uses of different makeup brushes, proper care of tools, and the specifics of applying makeup. Nail design is limitless! With this class, you can bring your unique ideas to the table and learn new skills to create stunning looks. Additionally, we will focus on fine motor skills, paying attention to fine details, and listening to clients' requests.

We will also have themed days to explore various styles and techniques. Lastly, if time permits, we will practice some basic hair designs.

Digital Escape Room

Do you like puzzles? Then Digital Escape Room option is for you! Play various escape rooms, then the challenge will be to create your own on the Escape Room Digital Platform.

Handball

Students will have the opportunity to learn the more refined aspects of a popular sport, handball. Students will be able to participate in drills and games in order to improve their skills.

Speak Out! 

In this class you will have the opportunity to "speak out!" We will work on building your confidence through a variety of drama games and exercises this term.

Leather Work Intro

Leather work is making items out of leather. As with many crafts there are a number of steps from raw material to a finished project. Students will learn to cut leather, hand stitch and sew.

Leather Work/Beading Advanced

This class will include stamping and beading. Students should have some knowledge of working with leather. Beading includes decorating the leather with special designs. If the student is enthusiastic and curious about how to create a design with beads on leather, this is the class.

Musical Theatre

This course is a three term commitment (Term 2, 3, 4). Hey there, future stars! Are you ready to step into the spotlight and bring a story to life on stage through acting, singing, and movements?

If you love performing, then musical theater is the perfect place for you! We are thrilled to do the Broadway musical production of Annie.

This musical tells the heartwarming story of a plucky orphan girl who, during the Great Depression, finds a new home with the wealthy and warm-hearted Daddy Warbucks. Famous songs include “It’s a Hard-Knock Life” and “Tomorrow”. Auditions for acting roles will take place at the start of Term 2.

Main roles will have extra practices at lunchtime. You can steal the limelight as a main character or be a part of our amazing supporting cast.

Paint-by-Numbers / Diamond Painting

Paint by Numbers uses a pre-made canvas where students follow a legend to create a beautiful piece of art. Students will paint in a relaxing environment while enhancing fine motor skills and creativity. Students will learn about brush strokes and color blending to make their end product the best it can be.

Robotics

We will use Lego Education Spark kits to build, assess and problem solve for various situations. All of the work is team based, usually in groups of two or three.

Special Projects

Looking to do something independently and be a mentor at Blueberry School? Apply for the Special Project option. Check the job postings on the Daily Announcements, then apply for a job. Jobs may include helping around the school, the classrooms or independent work.

Tinkercad

Here you'll explore Tinkercad, a user-friendly online tool for 3D design, electronics, and coding. Throughout the term, you can explore learning to create and manipulate 3D shapes, building and simulate circuits, and try to use block-based coding with Tinkercad Codeblocks. Tinkercad allows you to use the same principles of design and engineering to create, challenge, and cultivate your Tech skills, making this an exciting and rewarding option to choose.

Term 3 Course Descriptions

Advanced Art

Here you will have a chance to create a few different pieces, using different mediums to create your very own work of art!

Animal Health

If you love animals, this is the course for you! Students will improve their understanding of how to care for and manage animals. Learning the physiology of cats, dogs and horses, is just the beginning of learning how to care for animals. Course highlights include getting to meet/learn from local veterinarians and community members involved in grooming and agriculture.

Floor Hockey

We will be learning the fundamentals of floor hockey, as designed for a 3-on-3 game.

Hammer & Nails

If you're interested in carpentry, this is the course for you! Students will learn basic carpentry skills and safety, then participate in introductory-level projects, such as building a birdhouse or jewellery box.

Course Fee: $40

Musical Theatre

The halls of Blueberry are alive with The Sound of Music, one of the most beloved stage musicals of all time! We will share the heartwarming story of Maria, the seven von Trapp children, and the Captain in the hills of Salzburg. Auditions for acting roles will take place in September/October at lunch recess. Main roles will have extra practices at lunchtime. You can steal the limelight, be a part of our amazing supporting cast, or help behind the scenes with tech and design! This course is two terms with a fee of $40 per term. This course includes a field trip to see a professional production of The Sound of Music at the Citadel Theatre in March.

Robotics

We will use Lego Mindstorms kits to build, assess and problem-solve various situations. Work is team-based, typically in groups of two.

Badminton

This is an opportunity to work on skills and game strategy for both singles and doubles play.

Blueberry Amazing Race Team Challenges

Can your team be the ultimate champions? Video Games, brain games and puzzles, strategic games, physical games and cooperative games will test the students ability and teamsmanship. 

Course Fee: $5

Face Painting

Join the fun with Face Painting! In this option you'll learn cool styles and tricks, and even get ideas for holidays. Be ready to practice on a friend, and in return, they'll paint your face too. It's a super fun way to learn and have a colourful time together!

Soccer

Skills, drills and games will be the focus of the soccer option. Learn to play a strategic game while building confidence with the ball. This is an outdoor option, so be prepared to dress for the weather.

Track and Field

Run, jump and throw! In this course, students will spend time refining their track and field skills. Students in this option may choose to try out to qualify for the Blueberry Blaze Track and Field Team. Those who have competitive results will be able to attend the West Zone and Divisional track meets.

Sewing

Life is sew amazing! In this class you can create a stuffed animal that you can keep or donate to the Children's Stollery. If you are up for a challenge, you can create a patchwork blanket from recycled materials. It makes a great fire blanket for summer nights!
